The suffragettes campaigned for the vote in the years up to the
First World War in 1914, but then ceased their militancy in order to support the nation in its hour of need.
The women put away their banners and went to work in the factories and onto the land, replacing the men who went to fight in the trenches. Their reward was limited enfranchisement in 1918 followed in 1928 by the vote for all women over the age of 21, some 25 years after the suffragette movement was first formed.
